BATTERY TESTING SERVICES
There are many reasons for testing batteries and many types of measurements that can be made. We know which types of testing will fit your needs and can get you a result efficiently, without wasting resources, time, or money.
Why is testing batteries so important?
- Evaluating the suitability of a cell for use in an application
- Verification of a cell or battery pack design
- Performance limitations under a variety of environmental or electrical conditions
- To understand how a battery ages and operates at various stages of its useful life
- To provide data that can be used in mathematical models that can predict its reliability and future performance
- Testing gives useful information on the safe operation of the battery
- Analysis of failed cells or batteries can provide useful information to improve the battery chemistry or cell or battery design
- Testing might also be performed to meet certain standards such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL)
- Or regulatory requirements set forth by the US Department of Transportation (USDOT), the United Nations (UN), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), etc., and similar bodies in other countries
- In a society that has a lot of litigation, battery data from performance, reliability, and safety testing can also help protect companies from liability or act to support the company’s intellectual property
Testing for technical qualification
- Perhaps you are interested in new battery technology. We can test it thoroughly to evaluate whether it is suitable for your application.
Testing for cell or battery pack suitability in an application
- Performance analysis (capacity, power, and cycle life) under various electrical and environmental conditions
- We generally test at three temperatures to quickly understand the operational limits and battery life
- Vendor qualification or comparison
Reliability Studies
- Test data of all types can support mathematical models of a battery’s reliability which is especially important for warranty determination and for critical applications such as military, space, or medical
Failure Analysis
- Failure analysis allows the understanding of potential design flaws and differentiates between types of failure: material, electrical, or abuse
Fail-safe device testing
- Cells, batteries, and their related electronics have several fail-safe devices to help prevent failures. They should be tested during the design verification stage
Pre-Certification (e.g., UL, DOT) testing
- It is prudent to pre-test a cell or battery pack before it is submitted for regulatory testing to verify all tests are likely to pass the first time through agency testing.
